“Painting is Latin while photography is Greek – in the etymological sense, but also in the theological. Painting is active, dramatic, verbal, tactile, bodily…Catholic. But photography worships in the Greek Pantheon: photography’s god of choice is Thanatos, as its religion is made of sleep, stasis, and death.”

- Lee Henderson

For Still Life With Thanotatic Animals Henderson digitally photographed trophy animal heads through the viewfinder of another camera to capture the various camera settings as well as the animal being shot. In doing so Henderson draws a similarity between subject and photograph, preserved animal and preserved image, that is as much a commentary on the operation of photography as anything else.
