Rock and Roll
Curated by Gordon Laurin
September 6 – October 12, 2008
Opening Reception: Friday September 5, 8pm
The exhibition includes works by Angela Antle, Michelle Bush, Michael Flaherty, Kym Greeley, Barb Hunt, Pierre LeBlanc, David Morrish, Steve Topping and Craig Francis Power. While the individual practices of the artists diverge significantly, and include a range of artist mediums, they all share an interest in examining community and place. The nine artists all identify strongly with Newfoundland and Labrador, and acknowledge that their practices are shaped and directed by the particular cultural circumstance of the province. However, they approach artmaking not as a means of representing the Rock, but rather by considering what continues to be unique to Newfoundland, and how this sense of cultural autonomy can be understood as the province’s historical isolation gives way to increasing immersion through technology, commerce and travel.
